Evangelism Update July 26, 2008

Evangelism Quote:“The Master who said ‘Come’

Is the Master who says ‘Go’;

The truth He teaches us

He wants the world to know.

The gospel that saved us

Is the gospel that saves still;

And others will find joy

In the knowledge of His will.” –UnknownEvangelism Opportunities:1. Friday August 1st, 9:00PM—1:00AM: Evangelism at Lower Greenville Avenue. Saturday August 23:1-4PM: Three slots open.4-7PM: Three slots open.7-11:30PM: Two slots open. Evangelism Report:On Friday night, believers went in several different directions throughout DFW to share the Gospel. The youth from First Baptist in Justin went to Southlake Town Square under the leadership of Chad Welty. Ron Martinez and Sunil George of Countryside Bible went to the Town Square in Flower Mound to share the Gospel. And I took a small team to the Stockyards in Fort Worth to do the same. I thank God for Ben Moore, Andy Waynick and Jeff Pittman who came out to the Stockyards. This was a blessing to have good coverage of the area with the Gospel. All told, many hundreds of tracts went out and there were many one-to-ones.It was a little slow in the Stockyards, which surprised us for a Friday night, but we still had divine appointments. The first person I spoke to was a teenager named Moses who is a fairly new Jehovah’s Witness. We spoke for a long time. Praise the Lord, we were able to open the Bible together and examine the claims of Christ and the Gospel. Moses admitted to breaking the Ten Commandments (that seems funny to type even as I’m typing it). At first he tried to justify himself a bit by saying that back in Biblical times people weren’t as bad as people are today and they had the ability to keep the Law. I pointed out to him the scene that took place when Moses (the Biblical one) came down off of Mt. Sinai with the commandments in hand. The Israelites were worshipping a false god and were in open rebellion! No, mankind has always been desperately wicked. Please pray for Moses. He is confused. He told me that the people at the Kingdom Hall told him that he should not take tracts or talk to people like me, that basically serious Christians who evangelize are agents of Satan, and that we’re out to stop the “truth” of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He said this without animosity; he just stated the facts as he was taught them. I told him that he shouldn’t listen to any teacher based on their credentials alone, or who they are, but based on whether or not what they say matches the Word of God taught in context. Pray that he reads the tract I left him and that the Word will take root. It was a great blessing to serve the Lord with these committed brothers. May their tribe increase.Evangelism Training Opportunities:1. Come to the first Holy Epidemic Conference in the United States, to be held in Austin, TX on September 5-7! Holy Epidemic is a conference for Christians who are interested in learning more about street evangelism AND Christians who are already active doing street evangelism. <!–[if !supportLists]–>1. <!–[endif]–>Please remember Tim Crawford and his family in prayer. Tim is in New York now on vacation and ministering to his family. His mother, Marsha, has been diagnosed with cervical cancer. She had a hysterectomy last week, but the doctors have discovered that she still has cancer in her system. She professes faith in Christ, but it is a shaky profession. Pray that she will examine herself and if she is not saved, that she will repent and believe. Pray that the Lord will use this to bring the rest of the family to salvation. Pray for Marsha’s healing. <!–[if !supportLists]–> 2. <!–[endif]–>If you read our blog last week, you read about Herb, the bouncer in Lower Greenville. Herb called me this week and left a message which said that he recognizes his need for the Lord and he wants to get together and pray and talk some more! I have called him back and left a message. Please pray that I’ll be able to meet with him tomorrow; I leave for a previously scheduled family vacation on Sunday after church. Pray for his salvation. It sounds like the Lord is drawing him.

Evangelism\Discipleship Report: Greenville Avenue in Dallas:On Friday night, we were blessed with another strong team of believers who cared enough about the lost and the Lord’s command to go out and share their faith with night-clubbers. Strong contingents from both First Baptist Church in Justin and Countryside Bible Church in Southlake made it out. Once again, there were five teens from FBC who came out, led by Chad Welty. CBC was well represented by Kim Speed, Jason Sides, Andy Waynick and myself. Byron Porter joined us on the streets as well. It’s always exciting to have a nice sized team on the streets, even though we were missing some “regulars”! Praise the Lord! Once again, we had a phenomenal night of one-to-one. Additionally, hundreds of tracts went out. My best one-to-one of the night was with a guy named Herb. Herb was raised Baptist but is not attending church anywhere right now. He works on the bar staff for one of the night clubs and was relaxing outside before it got busy. We (me and Kim) had a lengthy conversation with him about the Gospel. He has studied many of the world religions and is clearly confused about what is the truth. He began to literally sweat (profusely) when we talked about the fact that a true Christian wouldn’t work at a nightclub. In fact, he brought this up, not us. His conscience was convicting him before we even brought up God’s Law. Seeing his conviction, I brought up the Law as it related to my own testimony and asked him about his own violation of the Commandments. He nodded his head vigorously when I asked him if he had broken each Law, but did not respond verbally, which is a further sign of conviction. His mouth was stopped (Rom. 3:19). We then talked about justification and I broke down 2 Corinthians 5:21 for him. Once I explained it he actually jumped back and shook his head. Grace was made amazing in his eyes. I’ve seen this reaction to this truth after sharing the Law on several occasions and am always thrilled when I see it because it’s clear they understand intellectually what Christ has done. I explained Biblical repentance and faith and encouraged him to read his Bible. He accepted a tract and a business card. Please pray that the Gospel will find root in Herb’s heart. I saw Andy speaking intensely with a young man and snapped a picture (see the end of this post). Andy told me last night that this young man heard the entire Gospel and was very close to salvation! He was in tears as Andy spoke with him. You can see in the picture that the young man is listening closely to Andy’s presentation. I thank God for Andy; his passion for the truth and love of witnessing is evident by the look of concern in this picture. Welcome to the team, Andy. As usual, we enjoyed some pizza and wings at the best Buffalo-wing place in Dallas, the Greenville Ave. Pizza Co. If you go, please tell Sammy that Tim and Jon (the guys from Buffalo) sent you. Evangelism Resources:1. Here is a very good resource for information on the historical\theological background of Mormonism. They have some excellent, detailed FREE online videos. Combine this information with a solid Gospel presentation, using the Law to bring about knowledge of sin, and you will have a powerful presentation for your Mormon friends. Check out the Mormon Research Ministry here. 2. Our friend Kevin Williams has made available a great tract called “How Would You Feel If Your Thought Life Was Shown On National TV Tonight?”. You can get the text of the tract and ordering details here. 3. Have you visited the Informed Evangelist lately? I’ve made some changes to the blog to keep you coming back. Visit the blog and not only read my rantings and musings, but check out the following regularly updated features: The Daily Spurgeon, New York Times Book Reviews, Primetime Jesus (Christology blog), Theological Word of the Day, Unreached People Group of the Day, and Rare Book Images. We will meet at Pizza Hut Park and do evangelism outside of the event. Evangelism Report: “Stars Under the Stars” event in Fort Worth:On Thursday we went out to the “Stars Under the Stars” event in Sundance Square in Fort Worth. This was a short outdoor film series in parking lot in downtown Fort Worth held for several Thursday nights in a row. We happened to go out to the last one. TLC Staff, Tim’s six year old son Brandon, and Jeff Pittman had a blessed night sharing the Gospel. The atmosphere there was much different than on the usual Friday or Saturday night. It was much more relaxed and more of a family friendly atmosphere, which was a nice change. We had some great one-to-ones and passed out quite a few tracts. It seemed like it was fairly easy to speak with everyone. I had a good one-to-one with a guy named Carlos who responded well when we went over some of the Ten Commandments. Before they showed the movie “Spiderman” on their inflatable movie screen, we debated about going in and preaching in front of the screen since the show wasn’t going to start for a little while yet. Me and Tim went back and forth; neither of us was excited about doing an open-air there. It’s always harder to preach to a crowd assembled for another purpose than it is to preach when there is no crowd and it is up to you to draw one. On top of that, I hadn’t been feeling well that day, so there were plenty of excuses to not do it.Finally, I prayed about it and felt like I should try it. The Lord provided the needed strength and boldness and I did a conventional Way of the Master-style open-air. In other words, I warmed up the crowd by giving away money for trivia questions. When I got to the Gospel, no one left because they all wanted to keep their seats. Praise the Lord, He gave me wisdom and I was able to get the whole Gospel into the message without interruption. Everyone listened respectfully. A police officer that I watched closely stood in the back and did not move while I preached (not what I was expecting). A nearby bar with a veranda on the second floor provided some listeners as well. I was shocked because when I finished the crowd actually applauded! At that point, we started to leave and then decided to go back and give out tracts to everyone. After all, if they would let me preach uninterrupted, then they wouldn’t mind tracts either. We started to do this, but the police officer came up and said we couldn’t do it and that the event was not intended for us to come and preach at. Furthermore, the parking lot is private property (which we did not know) and so we thanked the police officer and left. Later, several security guards who are hired by the Bass family (the lot is their property) came over to say the same thing and take down my name and address. The security guard we spoke with was very supportive and a professing Christian. He only had to do his job and we certainly don’t blame him for doing so. He was encouraged by our efforts there.The biggest blessing of the night was seeing Brandon passing out tracts. It was the first time that Brandon had ever done this. He went from being timid to being bold. Folks, if a six year old can do it, so can you! Taste of Dallas Festival, West End Marketplace, Dallas:We were blessed with one of the largest street teams we’ve had so far this year on Friday night when we went out to the West End to hit the Taste of Dallas festival with the Gospel. We had 17 people come out to pass out tracts, do one-to-one and witness! We had a solid contingent from First Baptist Church in Justin. In the group photo below you see the folks from FBC: in addition to TLC staff there is Jeff Pittman, Chad Welty, Laura Welty, Jason Sidler, Tony Sidler, Liz Sidler, Kristen Sidler, John Sidler, Brooke, and Taylor Dunlap. Joining that group were Ron Martinez, Byron Porter, Jason Sides, Wayne Owens, and Jeff Owens. Of special note is the fact that Pastor Jason Sidler and his entire family joined us! What a blessing to see not only this man of God come out on the streets, but he brought his family! When we got out there, we split up and went through the festival passing out tracts and doing one-to-ones. It was one of the best nights we’ve had in Dallas. The atmosphere was conducive to stopping people and talking. Ron Martinez had a long one-to-one with a young man who had many questions about the Gospel. I spoke with a guy named Juan who listened closely in that first hour. Just about everyone ran out of tracts. After that first hour, we moved into the main part of the festival and set up next to a large barbeque pit to do open-air. Tim rolled our mannequin, “Lazarus”, out of the bag next to the curb while I got our amplification unit ready. When we turned around to face the street, we were surprised at the small crowd already assembled, just staring at the mannequin. I had been praying about how to draw a crowd because I did not want to use trivia questions and money. The Lord had answered my prayer, so I just went ahead and preached. The mannequin and the barbeque pit provided great illustrations while I preached. At one point the guy who ran the pit opened the door and huge flames burst out. It reminded me to preach about Hell, since it was so hot just standing there near the pit. Praise the Lord, He enabled me to preach the Law, judgment, Hell, the Cross, justification, repentance, faith and Lordship. The crowd listened the whole time and grew a bit in size. Just as we were finishing up, two police officers approached me and asked me to stop preaching, which I respectfully did. I asked where we could preach and they indicated it would have to be outside the festival. We quickly packed up the equipment. As we did several people came up and actually thanked us for sharing the Gospel! One young man said, “I come out here a lot on Friday nights and have heard different open-air preachers. I don’t agree with a lot of what they say or how they say it. But what you preached was solid doctrine, Biblical, and done in a way that glorified Christ. Thank you.” What an encouragement! He is from Denton Bible Church, a church which TLC greatly respects because of our work with some of their people at UNT in Denton. This is our goal. There is a lot of open-air preaching which is either doctrinally unsound, contains little depth, or is done in a way which does not glorify Christ. I confess to being excited about this comment, not because of pride (which I do have to guard against), but because it shows us that we’re on the right track. As an open-air preacher, one thing I remember is the faces of the people who listen. That is what excites me. Not the size of the crowd or the “decisions”, but the looks of serious consideration, concern, conviction and sometimes repentance on the faces of those hearing the Gospel. This is proof that good seed is being sown into their hearts. Whether the soil is good or bad is up to the Lord. He brings the increase. We just need to faithfully sow the seed. We are responsible for the kind of seed we’re sowing; are our messages filled with the Word of God and sound doctrine? They should be.Evangelism Resources:1. If you read our review of Bentley’s false teaching in Denton last week, you might also enjoy this perspective from a professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary here in Fort Worth.

2. Here is a powerful message by Dr. Voddie Baucham on the fact that Christianity in America is dying one generation at a time. He deals with the centrality of the home in evangelism and discipleship. This is “must listen” stuff.

3. Here are a couple of audio clips of Ray Comfort and Todd Friel sharing the Gospel. Well worth the listen.

4. Here’s a video clip that will make you weep if you have a pulse. Oh, how precious our children are. Have you thanked God for your children today? This is a powerful companion to item #2 above.

Missions Prayer RequestWe received the following email from TLC Evangelism Team Member, Byron Porter, regarding his upcoming missions trip to the Dominican Republic. I would like to ask that you will be a prayer partner for a mission trip I’m taking to the Dominican Republic August 9-17. This will be a wonderful opportunity to grow in Lord through calling folks to repentance and faith in Christ alone and serving the people. If you will partner with me I’d like you to start praying for:

  • Boldness in delivering a biblically sound Law/Grace presentation during witness encounters
  • Wisdom in preparing a mini-sermon to deliver to a church congregation and passers-by in Santo Domingo and Baharona
  • A passion for reaching the lost in DR and being effective in bilingual encounters while displaying love
  • Safety for our church team missionaries
  • Provision for the funds to get there and back

Todd Bentley Revival Meeting in Denton, TX:On Thursday, TLC Staff, Chris Diggs, Byron Porter, Lis Dyvig, and Ron Martinez went out to the Todd Bentley meeting in Denton. This was a last minute decision since we didn’t know about this meeting until that day. We brought a couple of small video cameras and an electronic audio recorder to do interviews with the people who were in attendance. People didn’t want to stop for interviews outside of the arena since it was so hot and because they were afraid they’d miss something (even though we were there two hours prior to the event). We went inside and passed out several hundred tracts to the attendees. We did one video interview with another attendee. Chris and Ron had several one-to-ones. Chris also videoed Tim Crawford doing an open-air outside of the event as people came in. Several stopped to heckle him, but he had some very good conversations with them and planted doubts using the Word of God, in context. Meanwhile, several of us stayed to hear what Bentley had to say and witness the “healings.” To read a report of what we saw, please read my “other” blog. Southlake Independence Day Celebration:This report comes from Tim Crawford, who lead a team out to the Southlake Town Square on Thursday night…

We met at First Baptist Church in Justin at 6:45 and headed over to Southlake Town Square for an amazing night of witnessing. We were blessed to have some new troops with us from our youth group at FBC. Josh Lewis (FBC Youth Pastor) has been really challenging his youth on what it means to be a “Ambassador for Christ” and a “Minister of Reconciliation”. The fact that we are “Born Again” means that we have been given this ministry and anything short of being or doing means you are “walking in disobedience”. It sure is a blessing to see a man of God teaching his youth group the hard truths and not the watered or dumbed down version of the Bible. Hats off to Josh and I hope to see the church at large grasp this concept.

There were many one-to-ones and some very receptive group witnessing. There were teens everywhere with everything you can imagine except the only thing that matters and that is CHRIST. What profits a man, who gains the whole world and loses his own soul (Mark 8:36). These kids in Southlake are wealthy but lost, so it is a real mission field and it is right in our backyard. We passed out many tracts and at 9:30 we were all able to enjoy a beautiful fireworks display for about 25 minutes. After that we continued passing out tracts as the crowds left. This was a great opportunity and we continued until about 11:30 and then we headed to IHOP for breakfast. The team was me, Chris Diggs, Andrea Fraught, Liz Sidler, David Goggins, and Ben Strader. Evangelism Resources:

1. Here’s a great video and song from a friend of our family’s (Speed’s), Abigail Miller on the blessings of children. We have been blessed by Abigail’s music. A great reminder of Christian parenthood. This is not strictly an evangelism resource, but hopefully it’s a blessing to you.

2. Check out this new site (still in development) called Evangelism Streetwear. They are selling a couple of great evangelistic t-shirts with Gospel tracts to match! We highly recommend these t-shirts.

3. The Five Hundred outreach also has a new storefront open! Their store includes tracts, signs, t-shirts and an official Five Hundred outreach fundraising t-shirt. Support the outreach and buy some evangelistic stuff today! 4. My good friend Tom Rayborn of Christ Church of Alton, IL is graciously offering a FREE book which has been recommended by Paul Washer, among others. The book is “Justification and Regeneration” by Charles Leiter. There are other books available as well. Check out their web offer here. 5. Voice of the Martyrs is offering a FREE copy of Richard Wurmbrand’s classic, “Tortured for Christ”. Get your free copy (or send one to a friend) here. 6. Check out this blog concerning the very popular church\music ministry based in Australia, called Hillsong. Their public support of the Roman Catholic church not only marks them as compromised, but heretical. 7. Speaking of the Word of Faith movement, come to Countryside Bible Church on Sunday July 20th to hear Justin Peters’ seminar called “Call to Discernment”. Justin has done extensive doctrinal and practical research on this movement and will expose their false doctrines in this seminar. You can get more information here.Persecution in Japan:Please keep the Yamazaki family in prayer. They are church planting missionaries in Japan who have faced opposition because they share the Gospel. Here is a recent email that Genesee Country Church received from Takuji Yamazaki:We had tract distribution one a week around Toyohashi City area. I got a phone call from one of the residence in Toyohashi city. A young man told us not to post our tract. I told him that if he does not want to read it, please throw it away. But he really upset me and come to his house to take it. At his house I apologized to him to make him uncomfortable. But he was ready to do violence to us.I thought to pass the tracts or to post it to the mail box is getting harder and harder in Japan. We are not ashamed of working for the Lord but please pray for him and may God give us strength. Soldier Reads Tract in Iraq, Killed Shortly Therafter

I sent some of them (tracts) and others to my son in Iraq to give out there. Three days ago the Army had a soldier transferred to James, my son, so that James could work with him . James tries to work with troubled guys, to help them start anew or do better in their work. Well this soldier named Joshua had just been there a day or two and James felt led to give him a tract. Joshua took it and read it at his bedside that night. The next day, as they were out on patrol, Joshua’s Humvee got hit with two roadside bombs. James said he knew it was bad just by the size of the explosion. James has been through so many of these bombs himself that he now has the honor of being the most blown up truck in the Battalion. An honor that no one wants. Joshua was killed that day, the day after reading that tract. As James was the one that had to pack up Joshua’s things and send them to his home, James saw the tract laying there at Joshua’s bedside and James is going to send that tract with a letter to Joshua’s family telling them that this is what their son was reading the night before he gave up his life for us all. I told James that I would want such a letter.

But do you see that giving that tract is the most important thing you can do?? The opportunity determines if we can talk or just give a tract, but we must do something. How could Stephen had known or even imagined that as he had those tracts printed up and then handed me a bunch of them that one of them would go all the way to Iraq and then be given to a young man on his last day on this earth? I know that God in His mercy saved that young man, for look how the Lord, knowing that Joshua’s time was soon, had him sent to James and then told James to give Joshua the tract! Then James saw how Joshua must have read it, because there it was right at his bedside. So you can’t know the impact of all of these things.
