Evangelism Update February 25, 2008

Evangelism Quote:

Disclaimer: These reports are intended for the encouragement of the saints and the glorification of our Lord Jesus Christ. They are in no way intended to belittle the evangelistic efforts of those who do not do street evangelism. If you are faithfully sharing the Gospel with those in your circle of influence on a regular basis, then you are fulfilling the Great Commission! We thank God for you if you do!

University of North Texas, Denton:

On Tuesday, TLC Ministries went to UNT in Denton from 11:00AM-1:30PM. We were blessed to have a free speech permit for Area C. We went to that area (or what we thought was that area), set up a small literature table stocked with Bibles, Mark Cahill’s book “One Heartbeat Away”, and tracts from Living Waters, One Million Tracts, Proclaiming the Gospel, and others.

After we set up the table, I stood up on the folding open-air stool that my brothers from Australia gave me when I was there in 2006 and gave a typical open-air message. This is the kind of open-air preaching that I love; straight reasoning from the Scriptures. We didn’t use money to draw a crowd, signs, or contentious behavior. It was straight-up Gospel, straight-up Scripture. It was a message almost identical to the one I preached at Mid-western State that you can see on our site here. I started with 2 Timothy 1:10 and spoke about the tragedy at Northern Illinois University, reasoning with the students that if the Bible is true and that Christ has brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel, they owed it to themselves to stop and listen. A few students actually did stop.

While I did this, Tim Crawford manned the literature table and used it to have many great one-to-one conversations. Before my open-air was over (about 15-20 minutes), we were out of Bibles and Mark’s books!

As I began to wrap up my message, two more students stopped to listen. When I stepped down I went over and asked them, “What did you think of what you heard?” They hadn’t heard very much, and so I just began to probe them about their own religious beliefs. Carrie was Reformed Jewish and Christy claimed to be just “ish”. Later it came out that she has a Christian background, but she was no help when talking with Carrie. I spoke with Carrie about what Judaism teaches and we discussed the Messianic prophecies, but to Reformed Judaism, the Messiah is more of a concept than an actual person.

Carrie claimed to have studied Christianity in depth in high school, so I asked her what she thought Christianity taught. It was clear that she hadn’t studied biblical Christianity, so I addressed those points where she was weak. In the course of conversation, without me having to bring it up, she said that she thought that the “main thing” is that we be good people. This was my opening to use the Ten Commandments and as I took her through them, Christy began to justify herself. All in all, it was a great conversation, the Gospel was shared and seed planted. Now it is up to the next Christian to water that seed.

After I finished with the girls, Tim had moved the table just up the way. It turns out that we were not in the right area, which is not surprising since the Student Activities office does not provide a map of the various free speech zones. It was an even better area, and we finished our time on campus passing out tracts and doing one-to-ones from the literature table. Tim had many great conversations; since I cannot find my notes from that day, I can’t record their names here, but there were two very good conversations with young men who were not saved. There was another with a young Christian lady who was very encouraged. Pray that the Lord will bring others along to these folks to water the seed planted.

Southlake Town Square\Buddhist Temple in Keller:

On Saturday night we were scheduled for the Southlake Town Square. However a birthday party that I attended ran late and I was not able to get out there until much later. Ron Martinez was faithful and before heading out there, went to the Buddhist Temple in Keller to see if he could find anyone to witness to. Praise God, he was able to share the Gospel for the first time with a man who called himself Jack! You can read about it on Ron’s blog.

Afterwards Ron went to the Square and passed out tracts there. It was hard plowing since so many refused tracts (which is unusual) and even the one-to-ones were not productive. When I got there later, I found the same thing to be true. It is odd how some nights at Southlake can be so productive with people who are so open and on other nights there is an absolute hardness to the Gospel. This is true of any venue. If you are not able to come out, please consider committing to prayer for these outreaches. There is a spiritual battle which takes place which most Christians never experience. Please help engage in the battle through prayer.

Texas Alliance Raceway Ministries Training (Saturday):

TXARM did their training on Saturday for their outreach at the upcoming NASCAR Samsung 500 race week at Texas Motor Speedway. I must confess that I approached the training with a bad attitude. Most evangelism training these days is thoroughly man-centered and neglects the biblical use of the Law in evangelism. This was not the case at all at TXARM!

Little did I know that the evangelism portion of the training would be done by a professor from Southwestern Theological Seminary and that he would push Way of the Master and Mark Cahill’s stuff! And that they have ordered tracts from Living Waters to hand out at the event! And that they would let us give an announcement for our WoTM one day training that’s coming up the week before the race! And that they would be willing to consider using OneMillionTracts.com’s “NASCAR Trivia” tract in the outreach!

It was so encouraging; a divine appointment. We’re excited about how we can team up TLC Ministries with TXARM and do outreach which is sanctioned by the speedway, which is just two miles from our homes here in Justin! There are also weekly opportunities in nearby Decatur, which we are investigating as well.

Please, if you have any time during the race week of March 29-April 6, please consider coming out to volunteer! TXARM encourages you to evangelize one-to-one using the Law as you serve people in many different ways.

You can sign up for:Set-up and maintenance of their Ministry Tent

Delivering coffee to speedway employees

Chapel Services (singing, speaking, worship leading)

Information Booths in the concourse

Car Show

Horse Shoes

Tent Hospitality\Fan Information

Literature and Flyer Distribution

Handicapped Transportation\Camp Ground Courtesy Patrol

Night Shift

Childrens Activities

Saints, 250,000 people will come out during race week! There will be no shortage of people to witness to while you serve! If you would like more information on how to sign up for any of these areas of service, please let me know (jon@lostcauseministries.com) and I will get you the appropriate contact information.

Evangelism Update February 18, 2008

Evangelism Quote:Peter Masters

“The Lord never intended church members to be like passengers on a bus, just watching the scenery go by and leaving everything to the driver. Neither did He mean us to resemble patients in a hospital, having all our needs attended to by the staff. Some church members these days are like perpetual students, ‘ever learning, and never able.’ They value doctrinal knowledge, which is fine, but they never ‘graduate’ and go into employment. They remain as ‘hearers only’ and spectators. Yet the Bible is full of passages which rebuke head knowledge not matched by committed service to the Lord.”

–Dr. Peter Masters, pastor-teacher of Metropolitan Tabernacle, the church founded by Charles Spurgeon in his booklet “Your Reasonable Service in the Lord’s Work”, page 4

Evangelism Report:University of North Texas, Denton:

On Monday, we (me and Tim Crawford) traveled to UNT to do some witnessing and get the permit for this Tuesday’s outreach. Tim spent some time passing out tracts near the bus stop and doing one-to-one while I walked around the campus looking for someone who was sitting alone to speak with. I found a man named Chris who was sitting alone, waiting for the next class to start. Rather than spring a tract on him right away, I decided to sit down and just chat.

After a few moments, I gave him one of the Ten Commandment coins from Living Waters and asked him if he had kept the commands. He said he had not and then I asked him, “Well, how does someone go to Heaven then?” He gave a good definition of repentance and we talked about faith in Christ alone. He said he had grown up Catholic, went to a Baptist church for awhile and got “born again” and has since gone back to the Catholic church. We talked about confession (he had not been in two years) and then about justification. We talked about 2 Cor. 5:21 and about the necessity of trusting Christ alone plus nothing. I gave him one of Mike Gendron’s (Proclaiming The Gospel) tracts and another tract on True Repentance. Please pray that Chris will read them and understand the Gospel.

Meanwhile, Tim had a great conversation with two Marine recruiters and two students about the Gospel. He had used a simple springboard of “What do you think eternity is?” followed by “Where will you spend eternity?”. The conversation went well and the four of them listened closely to the Gospel. Pray for their reception of the Word.

Grapevine Mills Mall:

On Friday, the weather was not very co-operative in North Texas so we went to the Grapevine Mills Mall. I have to confess that for some reason, I was not in the frame of mind to witness. Tim started a great conversation with four teenagers using the Questionnaire pad from Living Waters. The questionnaire slowly swings the conversation to the spiritual in a natural transition. The kids claimed to know Christ, but did not seem to know how to articulate the Gospel.

At a mall kiosk, Tim started a great conversation with an Indian man who is a former Buddhist, Hindu and now is an agnostic. After a few minutes, Tim called me over to speak with him as well. Danny reasoned that if there is a God, He would be like a Father who would receive all of his children. What he did not understand is that we are not all God’s children (Jn. 1:12). I shared with him that the Lord Jesus said, “Forbid not the little children to come to Me” and that He said that we must become as little children to enter the Kingdom: humble and trusting. Danny needed to humble himself and trust Christ rather than his intellect. Tim then took Danny through the Ten Commandments. We didn’t get very far with him, but he reminded us of the unreached millions in India. How sad that such nice, but lost, people have not heard. It was a privilege to share the Gospel with him.

Southlake Town Square:

Ron Martinez went out on his own to the Square on Saturday night. In spite of the cold, he was able to give out many tracts and have one good one-to-one with a teenager. Please pray for that teen’s understanding and reception of the Word.

Fruit:

I got this email from Ron Martinez this week and want to share it here.

Jon, Tim I wanted to share this with some like-minded brothers. I finally received some comments on Gospel To The Perishing. Possible fruit? Here is one of the comments of one of the 3 teens I thought was not listening (emphasis mine). She always looked away as I talked. But here is her quote: “Hi, my name is Kristen [: And I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed you telling me about the gospel. It really made me want to attend church more often and it made me think about things a little differently. I just wanted to say thanks. I really appreciate it. [:”

Saints, please pray for Kristen. Keep in mind that even the people we think are not listening may be impacted by the Word! You can see what Ron’s been up to here.

And here is a portion of an email from Jose Muniz of Jesus Crew, who went to New Orleans to witness at Mardi Gras…

On one of the nights on Bourbon St. a man stopped by to talk to us……he was a Doctor……he only stopped by to tell us that we needed to leave and get out of the French Quarters……..even though he claimed to have a degree in Bible and said he was a believer…..he still insisted that we leave……he then told me that he was a millionaire……(wow I was so impressed…..ok so I don’t care being a millionaire…..I’m sorry…….he then offered me $10,000 if we would leave immediately…….of course I said “NO way”……he then offered us $50,000……too bad Dr., we are here on orders from the LORD JESUS CHRIST!………what awaits us……is way more then a few pieces of paper…..after about 30 minutes…..he then backed off and felt convicted of what he was saying and left………

Saints, would you stop witnessing for $50,000? Would you start witnessing for $50,000? (ouch)

Evangelism Resources:

1. Brannon Howse of Worldview Weekend discusses the problem of Christians being more active in politics than in evangelism! This is worth a listen. Check it out here.

2. Here is a helpful manual for witnessing to people of the Eastern Orthodox faith. It’s written by a Southern Baptist church planter who worked in Russia for several years. It is the best online resource I have found thus far on this subject.

3. Here is a fantastic website\ministry for witnessing to Roman Catholics: Proclaiming The Gospel. Mike Gendron is the founder of Proclaiming the Gospel and is based in Plano, TX. He has some excellent tracts, books and DVDs.

4. Check out the FREE conference audios from Countryside Bible Church’s Solus Christus conference here. Of special note to biblical evangelists will be Pastor Tom Pennington’s message on justification and Mike Gendron’s message on Christ alone in evangelism.

5. Check out TLC’s FREE article on the motive of love in evangelism.

6. Please read the latest blog entry at The Informed Evangelist, “The Medical School”. This is a parable about churches which may be guilty of what Peter Masters describes in our quote for the week.

Evangelism Training Opportunities:1. February 23rd, 9AM-Noon. TxARM is holding a training session for anyone who would like to be involved with evangelism at the Texas Motor Speedway during the April Samsung 500 event. They are a Southern Baptist group which uses a variety of servant evangelism methods to share the Gospel during race weekends. You can volunteer to hand out free water, drive golf carts to transport race officials, and share the Gospel while you are at it. TLC Ministries is going to participate in this outreach since there is no other legal way to access these 250,000 fans who come to our backyard in Justin, TX.

We encourage you to join us! The training will be located at TMS’ Infield Media Center. If you plan to come, enter the speedway through the south tunnel entrance, off Hwy. 114, between the administrative building and the Lone Star Tower office building.

2. On February 29th at 7:00PM, you are invited to the Speed’s home in Justin for an informal time of fellowship and planning for our local evangelism outreach in 2008. Evangelism and the Media:

I got this email from Brad Snow, the web designer for Way of the Master, this week:

I was watching American Idol and one of the guys that was auditioning was someone I had witnessed to on the streets of Fort Worth. His name is Josiah. I was preaching and he heckled me the whole time. We ended up talking after I was done preaching and the walls came down really fast. He wept and told me about his life. He admitted to me that his parents are Christians and that they are praying for him to come to the Lord. We talked a good hour or more and he really seemed to understand the full gospel. He took every tract I had and asked me to pray for him right there and now. He had been on my heart ever since and I was hoping to see him again, but as it turns out he must have moved on since he was in Atlanta for the American Idol auditions there.

Watch him perform here.

I just thought it was a blessing to see him. I pray he continues to seek after God.

God bless!

Brad

Evangelism Report:

Sixth Street, Austin:

This past Tuesday, the staff (me and Tim Crawford) of TLC Ministries joined Brad Snow (Way of the Master) and Jose Muniz (Jesus Crew) to evangelize at Sixth Street in Austin, TX during the “Fat Tuesday” Mardi Gras celebration. Juli Morrison, a longtime member of this list and great sister in Christ joined us as well. Jose is a seasoned street evangelist who has been doing this for more than 20 years and is based in Abilene.

Our strategy for the night was simple: Jose brought along 5,000 “What If?” tracts and a sign with the “What If” design on an eight foot pole. Sixth Street is shut down completely for Fat Tuesday, so we stationed ourselves at the main intersection, next to a large group of police officers in riot gear. We took turns holding the sign while everyone else passed out the matching “What If” tracts.

We got there at about 9:30PM or so and stayed until just after 1:30AM. During those four hours, we had many one-to-one conversations and gave out more than 1,000 tracts. Brad seemed to get a lot of the “intellectual types”, asking questions about evolution, the integrity of the Bible, etc. He did a good job defending the faith while swinging the conversation back to what really matters; their eternal destiny. Tim Crawford had a long conversation with a former Methodist who is now a skeptic. It ended on a very good note when they exchanged email addresses to keep in touch. Pray that this man will contact Tim and that they will have a fruitful correspondence.

Juli blessed me with her boldness. When groups of men would begin to crowd around a girl who was about to expose herself to them, she would push into the crowd, hold up the “Jesus tract” that Stephen Starnes (also of Jesus Crew, Fort Worth) designed and ask the girl, “What would Jesus think of you doing that?” She would then give the girl the tract and then pass out the rest to the men. That strategy was successful in stopping this lewd behavior on many occasions. The rest of the team adopted her strategy and it worked 90% of the time.

I seemed to get a lot of the false converts. It’s interesting to see how the Lord sets up these divine appointments because that is my testimony: I was a false convert pastor for many years. I had a lot of good conversations. In one instance, the guy I spoke with seemed to be a backslider. He had once walked with Christ and knew the Gospel. I was able to encourage him to follow the advice of the Lord to the church in Philadelphia which had lost its first love: remember from where you have fallen, repent and do the things that you used to when you walked with the Lord. I was blessed to give out several of the “True Repentance” tracts from Cornerstone Church in Orlando, FL, as well as a Bible and $5 to a homeless woman who had broken down in tears while I took her through the Law. Her tears were primarily for her situation and not her lack of true salvation, so I did not press her at all for a decision. It’s so important to understand that apparent “brokenness” may not necessarily be a sign of repentance. It can be that worldly sorrow which Paul speaks of which brings nothing but death.

Jose did what he always does; calmly present the Gospel to those he saw on the street. One guy approached him saying that he had heard Jose speak to his senior class in high school. Because Jose has been so faithful over the years, this is a common occurrence for him. It is the kind of thing that we want to see happen at TLC Ministries; Sovereign “follow-up.”

Southlake Town Square:

This week Countryside Bible Church hosted a magnificent Sola Christus conference. If you missed it, the audio recordings will be available for free from the church website in the near future. On Saturday night, a few of us went to the Southlake Town Square to pass out tracts and witness. What a blessing to do so with a full heart from the conference; ministering from the overflow of the heart!

Ron Martinez, Caleb Martinez, myself, Samantha Speed, Chris Diggs and his family, and a visitor to the conference from San Antonio named Brian all came out to share the glorious Gospel at the Town Square. Ron, Caleb and Brian went out together doing one-to-one throughout the Square. Ron, as usual, had a lot of great one-to-ones. Caleb snapped the pictures and Brian quickly got the hang of witnessing there in the Square.

Me, Samantha and the Diggs hung back at the fountain by Brio’s while I used the “Free Eye Exam” optical illusion (three triangles with text printed on the inside). I wanted to let the Lord draw the people to me that He wanted me to witness to and it was very effective. I had several groups of people at various times. One group grew to about eight teenagers. Many of the teens listened carefully to the Gospel and all received tracts. Please pray for their salvation.

Tim Crawford didn’t come out, but had a confrontational barbecue with his neighbor (as opposed to the no-strings, non-confrontational barbeques that are advocated by friendship evangelists). They come from a Catholic tradition and Tim has been witnessing to them in the area of the mass. Lord willing, Tim is going to use one of the tracts by Mike Gendron to present the Gospel. Pray for Tim as he witnesses to his neighbors.

Evangelism Resources:

1. Check out the free article on the TLC website on “Faithfulness”. This is a vital subject for anyone who does street evangelism; there are too many “one hit wonders” when it comes to street witnessing. Faithfulness like that we see in Jose Muniz is rare.

2. Check out Ray Comfort’s important message, “True & False Conversions”.

3. Volunteer for Need Him Ministries. This is a ministry which acts as phone counselors for such modern Gospel evangelists as Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Luis Palau, and many others. Ray Comfort has had an influence on them and many who do biblical evangelism have been signing up to do phone counseling from their home! All you need is a computer with internet access and a free phone line (dial up users won’t be able to do this). Once you are signed on, your phone will ring with people calling who want to “begin a relationship with Christ”. There are some cranks, but it’s a great opportunity to witness without leaving home. I used to do this faithfully before I moved to TX and am reapplying to do it again. Check it out here.

Evangelism Equipping Opportunities:

1. On February 29th at 7:00PM, you are invited to the Speed’s home in Justin for an informal time of fellowship and planning for our local evangelism outreach in 2008. Please bring a snack or dessert to share. We will discuss upcoming outreaches and opportunities for training, as well as sharing good evangelism resources. Evangelism Report:

On Saturday night, several of us got together solely for the purpose of glorifying the Lord by sharing the Gospel with the lost. This account is simply a record of what happens when a few normal Christians go out and do what the Lord commanded. The event was Dallas’ “Mystiqal” Mardi Gras festival. 5,000 were expected but 35,000 showed up.

Five of us (Ron, Jon, Tim, Chris and Jimmy) caught the TRE train to Dallas and had a good time of fellowship and witnessing on the train. Several conversations were started using simple “Ice-Breaker” Gospel tracts with the people who sat by us. I had a chance to share with a young lady (don’t recall her name), who admitted that she was not good enough to get to Heaven (without using the “good test”) but who did not understand the Gospel. We had a good talk and I gave her a tract on repentance that she read thoroughly during the rest of the train trip. Pray for her salvation.

When we got to Dallas, we passed out tracts at the train station and then moved up the street to the parade route. Since the parade had not yet started, we were able to move along the parade route and hand out many tracts to the attendees. Many one-to-one conversations came out of this.

During the parade, there was not much to do except try to hand out tracts to individuals as they walked by since the crowd was focused on the beads that were thrown from the floats. In one section, the crowd disassembled the police barriers and thronged the street so thickly that the parade had to stop moving. During this time we met a college\career aged believer from Irving Bible Church who was there for the parade and not drinking. She was excited about our presence there, handing out tracts, and gave us a bag full of beads to hand out with the tracts, which we did. We gave her a copy of Ray Comfort’s Hell’s Best Kept Secret CD, which she was grateful for. Pray that she will listen to it and come out to a future outreach. Her room-mate is not saved and Jimmy had a good one-to-one with her while Tim spoke with the girl from IBC.

When the parade ended, some people left while many others stayed for the festival\concert. We spent the rest of our time wandering through the massive crowd, many of whom were drunk, passing out tracts and doing one-to-one. Again, we had a lot of great conversations. I think I spoke with ten people or so and only one did not let me engage him in a meaningful conversation. I met many professing Christians, including a couple from Tony Evans’ church who cut me off when I asked them about the role of repentance in salvation. Evans has become a strong easy-believism advocate in recent years. Tim, Jimmy and Ron had numerous one-to-ones.

At 10:00PM we made our way down to the train station and continued tracting and doing one-to-one. Altogether, it was an excellent night. The revellers were very restrained (compared to the Mardi Gras stories I have heard out of New Orleans) and very open to discuss the Gospel. Most people gladly took tracts, even the ones that were “obvious” tracts. We wrapped up by stopping at IHOP to enjoy some good fellowship and food afterwards.
